Moratorium
Plans Made
By Debra Kroner
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer
Approximately 100 people attended
an organization meeting of the Viet Nam
War Moratorium Committee in Newcomb
Hall last night. The chairman of the
committee, Steve Squire, outlined various
proposals that might bring about the
cessation of classes both at the University
and local high schools October 15.
Mr. Squire told the crowd, which was
made up of students from the University
and Lane High School; one professor,
John Israel of the history department;
and some members of the Young Americans for
Freedom, plans for a day of "thought and
study" to bring the war to a close.
In an effort to stimulate student and faculty
awareness of the October moratorium, the War
Moratorium Committee proposed several alternatives.
An information table will be set up on
the second floor of Newcomb Hall. This will be
staffed by interested students who will
disseminate leaflets explaining the purpose of
the moratorium and the courses of possible
action that members of the University community
can take.
One of the plans suggested was to have a
mass rally. Although no definite plans have
been set, Senators McGovern and Fulbright
were mentioned as possible speakers.
Another way to encourage student involvement,
according to Mr. Squire, would be to
"inundate the area with posters." In this way, a
wider audience would come into contact with
the proposed recess of classes.
Tuesday night, the Student Council aired
the proposal and support was unanimous. On
Friday, Bud Ogle will present the Council's
motion to President Edgar F. Shannon, Jr. in an
effort to have University cancel classes on the
15th.
The role that the faculty should play in the
overall structure of the October 15 effort was
also outlined. Mr. Squire pointed out that it is
hoped that the issue can be aired before a
meeting of the University Senate.
