Council Solicits
More Students
For Committees

Student Council President Ron
Hickman announced at Tuesday
night's meeting that he has sent
letters to various student officers
requesting lists of students interested
in serving on Administrative
and Faculty committees.

Each spring, the letter explains,
the Council President submits a list
of prospective student committee
members to President Shannon Mr.
Hickman's letter is "soliciting
recommendations from various student
groups so that I may present a
substantial number of students,
representing all areas and aspects of
the student body, for consideration."

Letter Circulated

The letter has been sent to the
following persons: the Presidents
and Vice-Presidents of the Schools;
the Presidents of ODK, the Raven
Society, the Sceptre Society, Skull
and Keys, the University Party, the
University Union and the IFC; the
Chairmen of the Alderman Road
Legislative and First-Year Committees
and the current Chairmen of
Counselors for Alderman Road and
McCormick Road.

These students have been asked
by Mr. Hickman to send him a list
of people they know to be
interested in serving on a committee.
A biographical sketch, indicating
past activities, fields of interest
and specific desires of the student,
should be provided.

More Names Wanted

Mr. Hickman is hoping to
provide at least 150 names to allow
the President to appoint more
students to the committees. This
has been impossible in the past, he
explained, due to a lack of
prospective student members.

"Any student interested in serving
on a committee should contact
one of the named student officers
and make his interest known," Mr.
Hickman stressed.

There are at present 23 Administrative
Committees on which students
sit. These include the Calendar
and Scheduling Committee, the
Committee on the Future of the
University, the Master Plan Committee
and the Committee on
Student Activities, among others.

More importantly, however, five
Faculty committees have recently
been opened to student participation.
These are the Committee on
Academic Legislation, the Committee
on Admissions Policy, the
Committee on Athletics, the Committee
on Community and Branch
Colleges and Extension Centres and
the Committee on Educational
Policy and Budget.

Administration's Tool

"The committee structure has
been criticized as a tool used by the
Administration to delay consideration
or effectuation of proposed
change. I feel that much of this
criticism stems from a lack of
knowledge, on the part of students,
about the committee structure,"
Mr. Hickman said.

"I feel strongly that more
student participation in this area,
and it naturally follows, more
communication with students
about the committees, will serve to
allay this criticism. I feel the
committees provide a means by
which rational and meaningful
change may be accomplished within
the University, and offer an excellent
opportunity for student participation,"
he explained.
