IFC On Cancer Drive

Twenty-one social fraternities of
the University have answered the
Interfraternity Council's call for
help with a Cancer Fund Drive and
will on Sunday, April 27, canvass
the apartment buildings of Charlottesville
for donations.

Tuesday afternoon, representatives
of the 20 fraternities met in
the South Meeting Room of Newcomb
Hall with Mrs. William C.
Battle, wife of the Virginia gubernatorial
candidate, and with Bill
Nixon, chairman of the IFC's
Community Service Committee.

The purpose of the meeting was
to assign sections of the city to
each of the fraternity houses and to
discuss methods of soliciting donations.

Mrs. Battle began the informal
meeting by saying, "You will find
that most people are sympathetic to
the Cancer Drive and that few
people will be rude to you. I
suggest that you introduce yourself,
tell people what you're doing, and
then let them take it from there.

"If some one is rude, just tell
them that you're trying to help the
community; if they still slam the
door in your face punch them in
the nose." A round of applause and
laughter followed Mrs. Battle's
quip.

Becoming more serious, Mrs.
Battle said that the purpose of the
drive was to see that everyone in
Charlottesville received a card listing
the seven danger signals of
cancer. She continued to say that
76 deaths in Charlottesville last
year might have been prevented had
everyone been able to see one of
these cards.

The IFC Cancer Drive will be
concentrated solely in the apartment
buildings of Charlottesville,
buildings which in previous drives
have been passed over. Mrs. Battle
estimated that there are 6,000 to
8,000 people living in these apartments
and said that it is important
to emphasize the fact that all
money made from the drive will be
used for the Charlottesville area.
Part of the sum collected is to go to
the University hospital for research
and treatment of cancer patients.

The 20 sections of the city
delegated to the IFC have been
evenly divided between the 21
fraternity houses. The participating
houses are Alpha Epsilon Pi, Alpha
Tau Omega, Chi Psi. Delta Kappa
Epsilon, Delta Upsilon, Kappa Sigma,
and Phi Delta Theta.

Also participating are Phi
Gamma Delta, Phi Psi, Pi Kappa
Alpha, Pi Kappa Phi, Pi Lambda,
St. Anthony's, Sigma Alpha Mu,
Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Sigma Nu,
Sigma Phi, Tau Kappa Epsilon and
Theta Delta Chi.
