IFC Urges Support
Of Transition Fund
From Fraternities

By Thom Faulders

A motion supporting the transitional
project to help students
from "culturally deprived" backgrounds
adjust to the University
environment through a summer
program was passed at last night's
Inter-Fraternity Council meeting by
urging the individual fraternities to
raise funds by the April 1 deadline.

Bob Fisher, president of the
IFC, explained, "The IFC will act
as a collecting agent for all donations
and will contribute the money
to the transitional fund in the name
of the individual fraternities."

Incentive System

Artie Friedman addressed the
problem of the dissatisfaction with
committees of the IFC in past
years. He noted that in the past,
when a meeting was called 30
people would show up and then
would never be heard from again.
"The IFC is in the process of
establishing an incentive system similar
to that of the University
Union. Interested people will not
sign up for any one committee but
rather work for any committee and
then record how much time they
worked in the IFC office."

Earned Positions

Mr. Friedman continued, "When
it comes time for members of committees
to be chosen, those that
have shown a genuine interest will
be chosen. In this way, students
will have to earn their positions on
IFC committees."

Because of the vacancies on the
Governing Board left by the selection
of Mr. Fisher and Mr. Friedman
as president and vice-president respectively,
Jack Rhoades and Bill
Nixon were chosen to assume the
responsibilities. They will sit on the
Board until elections for new members
this spring.

Doorman Problem

Rick Miller, and IFC representative,
presented a preliminary study
on the Link Security Agency and
the situation with doormen on big
weekends. He noted from questioning
the social chairmen of many of
the houses, that at least two-thirds
of them were dissatisfied with the
performance of the uniformed
doormen. Reasons cited most, according
to Mr. Miller, were those of
increased costs to the individual
fraternities and inefficiency due to
the fact that the doormen did not
know the members of the houses.
Mr. Fisher added that the Governing
Board was studying the situation
and would decide if the men
from Link Agency will be 'rehired
before Easters Weekend.

The IFC Beer Party held last
weekend was considered a success
by the IFC Treasurer, Byron
Schenkman. He explained that for
the first time in recent history the
IFC has covered all costs, including
damage to Alumni Hall, with the
money collected for admission.

Fraternity History

In other business, Mr. Fisher
noted that for the Sesquicentennial
celebrations, the IFC is in the process
of writing a short summary on
the history of fraternities at the
University. He also reminded all
house presidents that they are supposed
to march in the upcoming
Founders Day parade.

He also mentioned the possibility
of establishing an annual dinner
each fall in honor of the alumni
from the various fraternities. "This
would attract more alumni back to
enjoy the football games and big
weekends," he added.
