Former Professor Dies;
Wreck Claims Student

Noted, architect and professor
emeritus of architecture at the
University Stanislaw John Makielski
died Saturday at the age of 75.

Mr. Makielski was made
professor emeritus at the University
in 1964. He began teaching
architecture in 1920 while a student
at the University.

He started his college career at
Notre Dame University School of
Architecture in 1915, but later came
to the University to receive his
bachelor of science degree in 1923.
Mr. Makielski was a practicing
architect in addition to his teaching
occupation. He helped with the
design of Memorial Gymnasium as a
student and in 1938 participated in
the restoration of the Rotunda.

Local Designs

Other designs of Mr. Makielski
include the Unitarian Church in
Charlottesville, the A. G.
Richardson High School of Louisa
County, the Morton Frozen Food
plant in Crozet and the Holy

Comforter School.

Mr. Makielski was recognized by
the Association of Collegiate
Schools of Architecture in 1959. He
also served on the Virginia State
Board of Examiners of Architects
for 10 years.

Active Citizen

Mr. Makielski was active in the
community and in his church. He
belonged to the Holy Comforter
Catholic Church and was a member
of the Kiwanis Club, the Colonnade
Club, the American Institute of
Architects, and the Charlottesville
Municipal Band.

During World War 1 he served in
the United States Army Air Corps.

Mr. Makielski's son, Stanislaw J.
Makielski, Jr., is an associate
professor in the department of
government and foreign affairs at
the University.

The funeral will take place at
noon today at Holy Comforter
Church. The burial will be in
Monticello Memorial Park.

Student Killed

Peter Swart, varsity swimmer at
the University, died in an automobile
accident early Friday morning,
December 20. Mr. Swart was a
second-year student from
Westfield, New Jersey. He was a
Dean's List student and lettered in
swimming during his first year at
the University.

The accident involved a car
owned by Mike Sorensen, captain
of the University's soccer team,
who sustained a minor injury in the
wreck. Mr. Swart who was driving
the car, was thrown from the
vehicle and killed instantly. The
accident occurred on route 29, 12
miles south of Charlottesville.

Other Injuries

Two other University students
were seriously injured in a head-on
collision automobile accident in
Pennsylvania when they were
returning from a wedding during
the Christmas holiday. Third-year
man Dan Cutler and second-year
man David Craige went into comas
from injuries sustained when their
car, when Mr. Cutler was driving,
slid on an icy street and collided
with an oncoming vehicle.

Florida Recuperation

Mr. Cutler has since come out of
his coma and is recuperating in
Florida. Mr. Craige's condition
could not be ascertained.

Paul Quick, a former student at
the University for two years, was
killed in an automobile accident in
Nashville, Tennessee shortly before
Christmas. The car in Mr. Quick
was riding with Kirk Todd, also a
student at the University, was
rammed by another vehicle on his
side. Mr. Todd escaped with minor
injuries.
