Fraternity Rushing
Starts This Evening
By Tom Jenks
Dorm visits by fraternity men to
the first-year dormitories last night
marked the beginning of rush, as
invitations to the smokers and
parties this weekend were handed
out.
The smokers will be on Friday,
from eight to twelve p.m., and the
parties will be on Saturday, from
nine to one a.m. First-year men are
reminded that both functions are
open to all and are not limited to
invitations this weekend.
No Rides
There will be no rides for
rushees with fraternity men this
weekend, and normal civilities will
be in force at the concert on
Saturday. All first-year men are
required to be off fraternity
grounds within fifteen minutes
after the end of a function, and are
warned against participating in
dirty rush, an offense which results
in a $50 fine for the fraternity and
ineligibility for the first-year man
to rush that particular house. There
are no rush rules for second-year
rushees.
Rush Emphasis
Ed Hayes, president of the IFC,
said "the emphasis of rush this
weekend is on the initial contact
between first-year men and
fraternity men and the importance
of their beginning to meet and
know each other. Regardless of
whether or not someone is planning
to pledge a fraternity, he is urged to
go through rush, if for no other
reason than to learn something
about this large segment of
University life.
"I believe that there are
tremendous advantages to be gained
from fraternity living, and I am
confident that there is a fraternity
suited to every first-year man. Rush
is for the first-year man, and it is
hoped that everyone will take a
serious part in it."
Printer's Mistake
A printer's mistake in
fraternity booklet that was
distributed to first-year men gave
the wrong address and map location
of the Theta Chi social fraternity.
Theta Chi is located on the corner
of Grady Avenue and Preston Place.
The first-year facebook, which
was a month late in being printed,
came out yesterday, complete with
all information pertaining to
first-year men. Measuring nine
inches by six inches, this year's
facebook is smaller than last year's
book, which measured eleven
inches by eight inches. Ninety-five
per cent of the entering class is
represented in the new book, as
opposed to only seventy-five per
cent in the old facebook.
Shannon Introduction
On the cover is a picture of Mr.
Jefferson's "Academical Village,"
and just inside, is a picture of
President Shannon, who addresses
the first-year students in the book's
introduction.
President Shannon writes, "by
entering the University of Virginia,
you have signified your personal
dedication to the pursuit of
knowledge - that tireless search for
truth which has been described as
an earnest prayer for light. On behalf
of all of us who came to this place
before you, it is my privilege to
welcome you to the opportunities
that you will find here, and to the
responsibilities of membership in
this community of scholars and of
those who are learning to be
scholars.
"You will find the University a
place of many freedoms, where the
self-discipline and self-restraint of
the individual make it possible for
us to live with a minimum of
regulation. Most of the government
that we have is provided by elected
committees of students. You will
have an opportunity to participate
in it and in some of the athletic
teams and organizations that serve a
wide variety of student interests."
Includes Advertisements
For the first time, the facebook
contains nine pages of
advertisements, a rush schedule
and, also, a map showing the
location of all social fraternities,
their addresses, and their telephone
numbers. It is now on sale for
$1.50 at the main desk of
Newcomb Hall.
