Printing Delays
Hinder Release
Of Face Books
By Jay Costen
Because of delays in printing,
the First-year Committee of the
Student Council has been forced to
postpone the distribution of the
first-year face book until Thursday,
October 3, according to Dan Lyons,
chairman of the Committee.
Normally available to the
University during the first two
weeks of school, the book contains
the names, pictures, dorm
addresses, home addresses, and high
schools of the entering class.
Several reasons have been given
for the delay in publication. The
financial responsibility for this
year's book has been shifted from
the Student Council to the
First-year Committee. Because of
this change, the publication date
was set back while the Committee
solicited adds to raise the $1500
necessary to cover the costs of
publication.
Initial Donation
Receiving an initial donation of
$100 from the Student Activities
Committee, the Committee raised
$500 from the Alumni Association
and $500 from the PK-German
Dance Societies. The rest of the
money was raised through
advertising, which was new to this
publication, and through
circulation sales.
Another holdup occured during
the summer, when the proofs were
lost in transit from the publisher,
King-Lindsay Printers of
Charlottesville, to the editor, John
Holman, who lives in Martinsville.
Last year's face book was published
by an out of town printing firm.
95 Per Cent
Besides the addition of
advertising, this year's book should
also include the pictures of 95 per
nt of the entering class as opposed
to only 75 per cent in previous
years, because of the student failure
to have pictures in before the
deadlines. The book sells for $1 and
should be available Thursday
afternoon in Newcomb Hall.
Since this book is invaluable to
fraternities in gaining information
on first-year men for Rush, the IFC
has obtained a copy of the books
galley proof and had ten copies
made. These copies are available to
fraternities on a checkout basis.
Duplication
According to Paul Talmadge,
Secretary of the IFC, a copy may
be taken out of the IFC office on
the third floor of Newcomb Hall by
a house for a half-hour to be
duplicated. Mr. Talmadge requested
that each house send only one or
two representatives to handle the
copying since space in the IFC
office is limited. A master copy will
also be posted on the wall of the
office for reference.
Office hours will be from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. Tuesday and Wenesday.
The Rush schedule will not be
delayed because of the obstacles
that have presented themselves in
the form of the face book. To
compensate, all first-year men have
been extended blanket invitations
to all houses on the grounds even
though they may not receive
invitations from them.
