Deans Cancel All Undergraduate Classes Saturday

The Cavalier Daily received the following notice from Irby B. Cauthen,
Jr.; Dean of the College, yesterday:

"I have consulted the undergraduate deans and other administrative officers
of the University, and I have been authorized to announce that undergraduate
classes will not be held on Saturday, December 16. There are
some valid reasons for this cancellation other than the persuasive editorial
in The Cavalier Daily which need not be enumerated here. The decision itself,
I am sure, speaks for our concern for our student body as well as our
pride in their achievements."

Consulted on the matter, Mr. Cauthen emphasized that this cancellation
applies only to the undergraduate schools—the College, commerce school,
architecture school, education school, engineering school, and nursing school
—and does not apply to graduate and professional schools.

He continued to remind students in the College that they must attend
classes tomorrow as usual to avoid possible placement on Attendance
Probation. He regretted any inconvenience caused by such late notice of the
cancellation.

Mr. Cauthen concluded by disclaiming all the credit for this move. In
fact, he said, "the other deans were more encouraging than I."
