Library To Install
New Xerox Copier
Operated By Coin

A coin-operated copying machine
will be installed in Alderman
Library this week, according
to Don Massey, head of the
Photographic Services.

In an interview yesterday Mr.
Massey said that the problem of
hours for the copying machine
should be solved with the installation
of a new Smith-Corona
copier, hopefully this week.

Machine Reordered

Mr. Massey added that the
new machine was a reorder due
to difficulties with the Xerox
company, but no further problems
were expected.

Asked why the machines had
been put on certain hours with
operators, he said that "in the
past, we had experienced many
problems with malfunctioning
and repairs due to improper
operation. In addition, some students
refused to pay for poor
copies that were due to their own
negligence. With trained operators,
our repair costs have been
cut 85 per cent, and we have relatively
little waste."

Time Restrictions

He noted that the time restrictions
on the machines were due
to the difficulty in finding employees
to work nights and weekends.

The new machine will be installed
in the reserve book room
and will run full time. He added
that "if the demand is enough,
we will order another machine
to supplement this one."

Change Available

Concerning the availability of
change for the coin devices, Mr.
Massey said that the machines
would take and change quarters.
Also, there will always be enough
change at the desk, he said.

Mr. Massey noted that he
hoped to set up a sliding price
scale for students who are making
a large number of copies at
once, rather than the present rate
of 10 cents per copy.

He said that the revenue received
from copies went mostly
for operation costs, adding that
the Xerox company receives four
and a half cents per copy, and
most of the rest goes for paper
and supplies. Any profit, he said,
goes back into Photographic
Services operations.

Copier On Order

Mr. Massey noted the problems
the Law Library has had
with obtaining such coin machines
from the Xerox company.
"We contacted the branch manager
six weeks ago, he said, and
finally had to reorder from Smith-Corona.
As a result, the Law Library
is also awaiting its coin
copier."

Other machines open to students,
besides those in Alderman
Library and the law school, are
in the Physics office from 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m.; Engineering Library,
8 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Medical Library,
8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Chemistry
Library, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.;
Graduate Business Office, 8 a.m.
to 5 p.m.; and in Madison Hall,
8:15 a.m. to 5 p.m.
