Fraternities Begin
New Rush Tonight
With Dorm Visits

By Chuck Hite
Cavalier Daily Staff Writer

Rush season begins tonight at
7 when 31 fraternities and a social
club visit the first-year
dorms, initiating their search for
new brothers.

During the next seven weeks,
until Sunday, November 19, first-year
men will be invited to smokers,
parties, and meals, to sit
with fraternity members at football
games, and various other
activities which hopefully will
lure them into joining a fraternity.

Tonight, fraternity members
will be giving invitations to smokers
Friday night and Sunday
afternoon.

According to the Rush Rules,
fraternity members in a first-year
man's room are required to
leave within five minutes after
another fraternity knocks.

IFC Meeting

Rush rules were clarified in last
night's regular meeting of the Interfraternity
Council. Fraternities
were reminded that smokers must
be registered by noon Thursday.

Other rush regulations stipulate
that no juke boxes will be allowed
at smokers and that all smokers
must have a hostess present.

A new rush rule stating that rush
violations must be reported within
seven days after their occurrence
was also presented at the meeting.
This rule further states that the
accuser remains anonymous except
to the person he accuses.

Westminster Program

In other business, Mrs. Robert
Cowgill asked the IFC to help
in the Westminster Study Tutorial
program. The program, sponsored
by the Westminster Presbyterian
church, needs student volunteers
to tutor culturally deprived
children on a one-to-one basis.

Volunteers would meet and walk
the students to church from 2:30
to 4 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and
Thursday afternoons. Each volunteer
would be expected to tutor
at least twice a week.

The program starts October 21
with a goal of 110 tutors by that
time.

Other Business

Turning to other matters of
business, the council reminded all
houses that they must have a
10 pound carbon dioxide fire extinguisher.
Houses were also reminded
that all dues and fees are
now due.

Any house wanting furniture
should contact President Lee
Hilbert as soon as possible.

The council also encouraged
fraternity men to order their IFC
rings now.
