Plans To Renovate Newcomb Hall Grill Are Now In Progress.

Plans to renovate Newcomb
Hall Grill and its adjoining
terrace into a "rathskeller-type
operation" are now in progress,
Dean of Students Robert T.
Canevari announced yesterday.

The project replaces earlier
plans for a similar structure in
Newcomb Hall basement. Costs
for the original renovation
would have totaled $152,000,
five times the original estimate,
according to Newcomb Hall
Director John Herring.

Limitations

"The problems were
monstrous," Mr. Herring said.
He said the many limitations,
including bad location, poor
entrances and unattractiveness
of the area all contributed to
the scrapping of the first plans.

"I couldn't be more
enthusiastic. The new plans
will include all of the aspects
of the first plan without the
handicaps," Mr. Herring said.

New Ideas

Relocation of the Grill's
food services, development of
the Grill's terrace into a dining
and social area and a "coffee
circuit" on weekends are
included in a variety of ideas
presently under discussion.

Mr. Herring said the terrace
can be used by groups at night
for social gatherings since the
Rotunda will no longer serve
this function, due to
restoration.

Renaming Grill

The Committee on
University Union which
originated the plan is working
with many University groups as
well as the Planning
Department and Food Services
to rename the Grill, get
equipment estimates and to
organize ideas into a definite
plan.
