Miller, Friedman Win Honor Committee Run-Off Election

Third-year men Mike Miller
and Mark Friedman were
elected president and
president of the College in
sparse run off balloting
Tuesday and yesterday.

Third-year man leddy
Chandler was elected
Commerce School president
with 46 per cent of ballots
cast, a total 95 votes His
opponents, Ellen Newman and
Boo Twohy, received 47 and
65 votes, respectively.

Wins 55 Percent

With only 30 per cent of
College students voting, Mr
Miller received 999 votes, a
total 55 per cent of all ballots
cast. His opponent, third-year
man Richard Berkeley,
received 806 votes.

Mr. Friedman received 1005
votes, approximately 56 per
cent of ballots cast His
opponent, third-year man
Gordon Morris, received 789
votes

Reconcile Bitterness

Mr Miller who
will now serve as chairman of
the Honor Committee,
commented. "We hope to do
our part to reconcile any
bitterness from the campaign.
We are both very happy and
feel that our immediate task is
to institute a new positive
attitude among the students."

Mr. Friedman said, "We felt
that we were elected on our
platform and we are obliged to
fulfill every one of the planks
discussed."

Mr. Miller and Mr.
Friedman have proposed to
make merchants aware that

just as they are protected by
the Honor System, so should
they reciprocate by extending
simple check-cashing privileges
to students.

They also proposed to
familiarize the students with
the procedural aspects of an
honor trial by holding a mock
and to have more
effective communicative
faces such as The Cavalier
Daily, the radio stations, and
the mail

Also proposed was
increased orientation and
interaction between the Honor
Committee and all students,
with special emphasis on the
upperclass students living
off-Grounds

Mr. Miller and Mr
Friedman have also proposed a
"hothne" which will serve as a
line of direct access from the
students to the Hono.
Committee members.

A student referendum has
also been proposed that will
have a University-wide
response because it will work
in conjunction with the spring
pre-registration process. It will
deal largely with the scope of
issues of the Honor System in
an attempt to obtain an
accurate reflection of student
consensus.

Educational Process

Mr. Miller and Mr.
Friedman plan to use the fall
semester as an educative
process for the students and to
implement many of the
communicative devices that
have been proposed in
preparation for the
referendum.

"Next year will be a pivotal
year for the Honor Committee
because it must finally adjust
to the administrative problems
more than the judicial

aspects," Mr. Friedman said "I
hope that we can stimulate a
stronger belief on the part of
the students that they are as
much a part of the Honor
System as the Honor
Committee is."

"The System's effectiveness
must not only be preserved,
but its spirit must be
strengthened," "Mr. Miller said.
"The Honor System must not
be allowed to become a haunt
for antiquated traditionalism."

"We will start to abuse
some efficiency to develop
workable alternatives which do
not infringe upon the Honor
System."

Affirmative Role

"The Honor Committee is
not a body set to dictate
policy," according to Mr.
Miller. "Unless the Honor
Committee takes a more
affirmative and assertive role
the positive effects of the
Honor System will sink into a
swirl of changes on the
Grounds and in the
community."

Mr. Miller is in the
government honors program
and has received Intermediate
Honors. He is a member of the
John B. Minor Pre-Legal
Society and the Jefferson
Society. He is also president of
Sigma Pi fraternity and was a
member of the resident staff
program in 1971-72.

Mr. Friedman is also in the
government honors program
and has received intermediate
Honors. He is a member of the
John B. Minor Pre-Legal
Society and has participated in
some of Madison Hall's
programs in previous years. Mr.
Friedman was president of
Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity in
1972.
