Slaughter Given
7 Society Award

By LIBBY WITHERS

Edward R. "Butch"
Slaughter, University
Intramural Director, received a
Seven Society check for
$777.77 to aid club sports and
a walnut paper weight from
President Edgar F. Shannon Jr.
Saturday in a halftime
ceremony at the W&L
Virginia basketball game.

In a letter to Mr. Shannon,
the Society said it chose to
honor "a man who has devoted
his life to the development of
the University's athletic
program."

The Society pointed out the
need for more funding for the
expanding club sports program,
especially because of growth
and coeducation. "Neither the
department of athletics nor the
Student Council has been able
to provide adequate funding,"
the letter said.

Mr Slaughter retires this
year after 41 years at the
University. He served as
football and golf coach, and as
intramural and club sports
director since 1957. The
Society cited this present
position as his greatest
contribution to University
athletics.

"Countless numbers of
students have
participated...Although sports
fans rarely hear of these teams'
accomplishments, they are an
integral part of a collegiate
athletic program," the Society
said.

The Society commended
the program for the great
contribution it gives to the
competitive, individual and
leadership qualities of students
not participating in sports on
the intercollegiate level.

Mr. Slaughter expressed his
"complete surprise" when he
received the award, although
he said, "I had been warned
that I was to be at the
basketball game".

"I've been here so long and
have seen the accomplishments
of the Society over the years.
I'm very pleased," he said.

Mr. Slaughter indicated that
no plans have been made yet
for the use of the money, and
that many people will have to
be contacted before plans can
be completed.
