4467. LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE, Astronomy and.—

Measures and rhombs
taken on the special surface of the earth, cannot
be represented on a plain surface of paper without
astronomical corrections; and paradoxical
as it may seem, it is nevertheless true, that we
cannot know the relative position of two places
on the earth, but by interrogating the sun, moon
and stars.—
To Governor Nicholas. Washington ed. vi, 587.
