4340. LAFAYETTE (Marquis de), Dishonored.—

The Marquis de Lafayette, for
signing the prayer which the deputies from
Bretagne were to present, * * * has been disgraced
in the old-fashioned language of the
country; that is to say, the command in the
South of France this summer, which[the government] had given him, is taken away. This
dishonors him at Court, * * * but it will probably
honor him in the eyes of the nation.—
To Mrs. Cutting. Washington ed. ii, 439.
