2079. DEBT (United States), Republicans and.—

An alarm has been endeavored
to be sounded as if the republican interest
was indisposed to the payment of the
public debt. Besides the general object of the
calumny, it was meant to answer the special
one of electioneering. Its falsehood was so
notorious that it produced little effect.—
To Thomas Pinckney. Washington ed. iii, 493. Ford ed., vi, 143.
(Pa., Dec. 1792)
