1281. CITIES, Foreign Character of.—

In our cities your son will find distant imitations
of the cities of Europe. But if he
wishes to know the nation, its occupations,
manners, and principles, they reside not in
the cities. He must travel through the country,
accept the hospitalities of the country gentlemen,
and visit with them the school of the
people.—
To Madame de Stael. Washington ed. v, 133.
