Whatever may be the
merit or demerit of the acquisition of Louisiana,
I divide it with my colleagues, to whose
counsels I was indebted for a course of administration
which, notwithstanding this late
coalition of clay and brass, will, I hope, continue
to receive the approbation of our country.—
