The whole business has
shown that neither Burr nor his [associates] knew anything of the people of this country. A
simple proclamation informing the people of
these combinations, and calling on them to suppress
them, produced an instantaneous levee en
masse
of our citizens wherever there appeared
anything to lay hold of, and the whole was
crushed in one instant.—
