505. ARMY, Increase of.—

An act has
passed for raising upon the regular establishment
for the war 3000 additional troops and a
corps of 300 more, making in the whole about
5000 men. To this I was opposed from a conviction
they were useless and that 1200 or
1500 woodsmen would soon end the [Indian] war, and at a trifling expense.—
