13. Coyote Misses Real Rabbit as told by Sam Kenoi

He was walking [along] a road.

Gah 'íńtiníbaͅaͅshíͅ sitíͅgo náyiiłtsáͅná'a.
Yiyeeshxahee hołyołná'ago, 'ándiná'a:
"Gah tséí háń dailá?"

He was walking [along] a road.
He again saw a Rabbit lying on the edge of the road.
As he went along quite close to it, he spoke thus:
"Who'd meddle with a rock Rabbit?"
he said.

háń dailá 'who would meddle with it?' - interrog. pronoun; -ń relative. da- interrog. proclitic; -i-, reduced form of yi- 3rd person obj.; -, imp. stem of 'to do, to make' [act. tr.]. This theme, it will be recalled, generally occurs with a prefix - 'thus, so'. Here that prefix is replaced by the interrog. procl. daa-. Literally, then, 'who is going to do what to it?'.

That one was a real Rabbit but he paid no attention to it.

1. shichółee 'oh, my grandmother'. shichó 'my mother's mother' plus -łee- which functions here as a vocative [cf. note 10.11, §1]. For a complete account of Chiricahua kinship terms see Morris E. 2. bilaatsíńshíͅ 'from his wrist'. laatsíń 'wrist', a compound of -laa 'hand, fingers' and -tsíń 'joint'. The latter does not occur independently but is found only in this and the compound kétsíń 'ankle' [- 'foot']. -laa 'hand' sometimes requires a high tone on its prefixes.

3. k'ejinshgéésh 'I'm going to cut it off'. 1st person imp. of 'e-ji-ni-...[ni- perf.]-géésh 'to cut off' [act. tr.]. k'e- 'off'; ni- completive.

Then Coyote also spoke thus:

baaha'jałghoná'a 'he got away from him'. 3a person perf. of 0aa-ha-'i-|...[hi- perf.]-l-ghee 'to get away from, to escape' [act. intr.]. aa- 'from'; ha- 'out'; 'i-| 'away'.

The verb theme -l-ghee 'to move', it will be noted, has occurred so far with a variety of prefix complexes, each of which has expressed a distinctive meaning. It will perhaps be instructive to review these as an illustration of Chiricahua verb morphology [see also Grammatical Sketch §§8-10].
