of the American revolution, there resided,
in the western part of Connecticut, a
gentleman of English extraction, whose ancestors
were among the earliest settlers of
this country. The patrimony he inherited
from his father, he had, by various speculation,
increased until he became the richest
man in those parts. His property lay in numerous
cultivated farms, most of which were
advantageously rented; in valuable wild
lands, and in money at interest on indubitable
