Description: The regular monthly meeting of the Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia was held on this date at 10 o'clock in the office of the President, with the following present: the Rector Edward R. Stettinius, Jr., President J. L. Newcomb of the University of Virginia, President-elect, Honorable Colgate W. Darden, Jr.; Visitors Garnett, Anderson, Bustard, Carrington, Calcott, Wailes, Willis, Black, Barksdale, Gay, Trout, Mears, Miller; absent Combs. At your meeting held September 13, 1946, the resignation of Dr. John Lloyd Newcomb was accepted with profound regret and this Committee was thereupon appointed by the Rector, pursuant to a resolution that he constitute a Special Committee of the Board, consisting of five members, of which he should be ex officio a member "to make a nation-wide survey for a successor to Dr. Newcomb and later to report its findings and recommendations of a list of names of persons deemed qualified to discharge the highly important and exacting duties of the President of the University of Virginia."
